The awards were presented at Halton Healthcare Services' (HHS) Annual Meeting and Awards ceremony over the summer. Established in 1987, in recognition of Parsons' 36 years as executive director of Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH), the fund provides annual bursaries to assist children of OTMH staff with their post-secondary education. The bursary is funded through donations to the Lillian H. Parsons Bursary Fund with only the interest being used for the bursary disbursements. Criteria for selection of bursary candidates is based on academic grades, volunteer and community involvement, as well as extra-curricular activities. Since 1987, more than $93,000 in bursary money has been awarded to more than 100 children of hospital staff. Parsons was on hand to present the award to the students, along with Liz Denyar, chair of the Lillian H. Parsons Bursary Committee. This year's recipients were Brittany Desveaux, Charlene Duncan, Danielle Kealy, Danielle LaBine, Riley Ward, Katie Williams. Desveaux is the daughter of Kimberly Hanson-Desveaux, a registered nurse who works in the Renal Dialysis Department at OTMH. Desveaux is a graduate of Assumption Catholic Secondary School and is planning on attending McGill University's Bachelor of Arts program. Duncan is the daughter of Edith Stewart Burnett, logistics manager at Halton Healthcare Services. Duncan is a graduate of Gary Allan High School and is planning to attend Mohawk College to study legal office administration. Kealey is the daughter of Elizabeth Jane Kealey, a registered practical nurse who works on the Maternal/Child Unit at OTMH. Kealey is a graduate of Assumption Catholic Secondary School in Burlington and is planning to attend Ottawa University to study nursing. LaBine is the daughter of Annette LaBine, a registered practical nurse in OTMH's Emergency Observation Department. Labine is a graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School in Oakville and is planning to attend Brock University to study accounting. Ward is the daughter of Cindy Ward, Manager of the Security and Parking Department at OTMH. Ward is a graduate of Lester B. Pearson High School in Burlington and is planning to attend McGill University to study chemical engineering. Williams is the daughter of Barb Williams a physiotherapy assistant at OTMH. Williams is a graduate of Abbey High School in Oakville and plans to attend Sheridan College to study media arts.
