www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday September 20, 2008 - 41 Atom Rangers work overtime to claim early bird tourney title The Oakville atom A Rangers edged the North Toronto Wild 3-2 in overtime to win the Humberview Huskies Early Bird Tournament. The Rangers posted a 4-1 record in the tournament. After being edged 2-1 by the Toronto Ice Dogs in their first game of the tournament, the Rangers won four straight games to claim the championship. Oakville bounced back to shut out the hosts, the Humberview Huskies, 90 and then topped the Humber Valley Sharks 6-5. Oakville then advanced to the final with a 3-2 win over the North Toronto Wild. The Rangers led the tournament in scoring with 21 goals and forward Bradley Byers was named tournament's most valuable player. "They played a lot of hockey in a short period of time and played some extremely strong teams from GTHL," said coach Jody Zedor. "Winning this tournament goes to show you that teams from Oakville can compete with, and in fact beat team from the GTHL. We not only beat these good teams but we did it with two of our players out with injuries." There are five new players on the team this season and the Rangers had only played together as a team a couple of times prior to the tournament. EARLY BIRD CHAMPS: The Oakville atom A Rangers won the Humberview Huskies Early Bird Tournament, edging North Toronto in overtime in the final. Team members are: Bradley Byers, Eric Brunelle, Andrew Ciuffreda, Cale Cutcliffe, Michael Franko, Sean Garvey, Ryan Horner, Christopher Howarth, Kyle Kolwich, Craig McCormick, Brian McGinnis, Alex Papineau, Michael Pare, Elric Schreinert, Luke Vasilaros-Wilson, Josh Widman and Jacob Zedor. The coaching staff includes head coach Jody Zedor, assistant coaches Tom Howarthand Steven Horner, trainer Mike Garvey and manager Steven Pare. Veltman guest speaker at Moxam tournament Former Toronto Rock captain Jim Veltman will be the guest speaker at the `08 Jordan Moxam Memorial Golf Classic. Veltman won eight National Lacrosse League titles with the Buffalo Bandits and Toronto Rock in his 16-year career. He was the Rock's captain for 10 years and won the NLL sportsmanship award in 2002 and the league MVP award in 2004. He also won four Mann Cups and was the captain of Canada's 2003 world championship team. The tournament is named in honour of Jordan Moxam, who died at the age of 12 after a 20-month battle with cancer. Moxam was a hockey and lacrosse enthusiast and the tournament raises funds to provide underprivileged children with the opportunity to play hockey and lacrosse. This year's tournament will be held Saturday, Sept. 27 at Deerfield Golf Club in Oakville. There are still openings for a limited number of foursomes and individual golfers. Tournament organizers are still in need of silent auction items such as sporting event tickets, hockey or lacrosse equipment, electronic items or restaurant gift certificates. Abbey Park, Trinity Aquinas start 2-0 in senior volleyball Abbey Park, Holy Trinity and St. Thomas Aquinas started the Halton Secondary School Athletic Association senior boys' volleyball season with two wins apiece. Abbey Park needed three sets in both its victories, topping T.A. Blakelock and Nelson. Holy Trinity swept its first-week matches, downing Loyola and Iroquois Ridge. Aquinas defeated Aldershot 2-0 and then edged White Oaks 2-1. Other results from the week included: Burlington Central 2, King's Christian Collegiate 0; Acton 2, King's Christian Collegiate 0; Robert Bateman 2, Oakville Trafalgar 0; Iroquois Ridge 2, Notre Dame 1; Robert Bateman 2, Loyola 1; Oakville Trafalgar 2, Bishop Reding 0; Christ the King 2, T.A. Blakelock 0. In junior boys volleyball play, Loyola, Iroquois Ridge, T.A. Blakelock and Oakville Trafalgar all started with two victories. Blakelock needed three sets for both of its wins.
