8- The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday November 5, 2008 www.oakvillebeaver.com Just Us Project aims to make global difference A young Canadian couple will launch a cross-Canada campaign at The Meeting House tonight. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. at The Meeting House, located at 2700 Bristol Circle, and will encourage young Canadians to support global development. Husband and wife, Alex and Meghan Nicholls, will screen their 40-minute film that features interviews with four young adults from Rwanda as a case study of people living in the developing world. An open, interactive discussion will follow encouraging young Canadians, who may feel they want to make a difference globally, but doubt their ability to do so, to get involved in international development through the Just Us Project (www.TheJustUsProject.com). It's a message the Nicholls's will carry to approximately 5,000 young Canadians in 30 communities between now and February. After the film, the Nicholls guide a group discussion allowing participants to share ideas about what can be done to make a difference. Those who want to take action will be connected to Canadian international development agencies, and receive ongoing support through The Just Us Project online forum and on Facebook. Words and Music for Peace tonight The 22nd annual Words and Music for Peace tonight will focus on the defence of human rights of Muslims in Canada. Hosted by the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights (OCCPEHR), it will take place from 7:30-9:30 p.m. in the auditorium at the Oakville Central Library at Lakeshore Road and Navy Street. "This year's theme insists upon the defence of human rights of Muslim people in Canada and features two keynote speakers from the Canadian Islamic Congress," said Mervyn Russell, OCCPEHR chair. The meeting will feature Khurrum Awan, an articling law student and graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School. Awan has represented the interests of the Canadian Muslim community before various legislative committees including the Senate Committee on the AntiTerrorism Legislation and the Parliamentary Committee on Citizenship and Immigration. Nafeem Mithoowani, the second speaker from the Canadian Islamic Congress, will also share her perspectives about human rights complaints. Tickets cost $10 and $5 for OCCPEHR members and students. The study has been undertaken to develop, evaluate and recommend preferred alternatives for the stabilization and rehabilitation of the creek channel and banks, along with possible flood/flow control improvements along Wedgewood West (Falgarwood) Creek. A set of alternative solutions has been evaluated and a preferred solution consisting of a combination of toe stabilization and creek realignment works has been selected. Two public information sessions have been held to solicit public input regarding the alternative solutions and preferred solution. The public are invited to provide written comments on this matter to the Town of Oakville or its consulting engineer, Philips Engineering Ltd., by December 10, 2008.
