The effort and donations from its customers and visitors will add to contributions for Oakville's Fareshare food bank. Hockey players, figure skaters, parents and coaches alike, have the opportunity to fill the net for hunger. Canlan recognizes donations are critical for Fareshare at this time of year. The initiative, launched two years ago, was designed to help increase awareness and food collection efforts within the local community. "We recognize that the food bank needs help all year long, but especially during the Christmas season. Partnering with the food bank was an easy choice as Canlan Ice Sports Oakville is a family oriented recreation facility and with 50 per cent of those in need being children we felt it right to do what we can," said Steve Wilson, sales manager of ice sports -- Oakville. There are more than 12,000 hockey players that use the facility weekly. To encourage donations, Ice Sports has placed a standard NHL sized goal net upstairs in the Thirsty Penguin Grillhouse for food drop off. Be a Santa to a Senior gets all wrapped up Home Instead Senior Care held a wrapping party for its annual Be a Santa to a Senior program Sunday at the Oakville Town Hall. The program, which is now in its fourth year, collected and delivered more than 1,500 gifts into the hands of needy and isolated seniors throughout Halton. Home Instead Senior Care partners with local retailers, non-profit agencies and volunteers from the community to make the program happen. The organization, which provides non-medical care services and companionship services for seniors, has 11 locations in Ontario and 21 across Canada. "We work with seniors and know that many of them feel lonely during the Holiday Season," said Tom Chuchmach, who runs Home Instead Senior Care in Oakville with Scott Johnson. "Be a Santa to a Senior reaches out to these people and helps inject the spirit of the season. If not for this program, many of these seniors would be without a gift for the holidays. This year we are seeing a lot of interesting gifts," said Chuchmach. A wide array of novel and practical gift items were collected and delivered to seniors, many of whom have mobility problems and other health issues. These gifts involve everything from jumbo-size playing cards to books with large print to a memory box, and include diabetic socks, hand-held electric can openers, sound magnifiers, magnifying glasses, a wide variety of mind games and neck pillows. In Canada, Home Instead Senior Care has 21 independently-owned locations in five provinces. Services include companionship, meal preparation, medication reminders, light housekeeping and escorts for errands and shopping.
