The school community has lost four Grade 12 students within less than two years -- two students passed away as the result of terminal illnesses, while two others chose to end their own lives. The two student suicides took place in December and January. While both students had transferred to other schools, the deaths still left an impact on the Loyola community. "It's been a very difficult year and a half," said Nijole Vaitonis, Loyola principal. "In view of the losses our Grade 12 class has suffered, we have teamed up with Bereaved Families of Ontario. For those students who are deeply acutely affected by those losses, we've set up a full-day session." After so much tragedy, Wednesday night's seminar was intended to educate parents about the warning signs of depression and what treatment resources are available.
