Tel: 416-551-7467 Since September 2008, students at Burlington's St Gabriel and Milton's Guardian Angels schools have been wearing a required uniform as part of a pilot project to study the impact of the clothing on the school environment. The pilot project has been beset with controversy, with a number of delegations to the board expressing staunch opposition to the uniforms. However, with the project nearing a close, a survey of the school communities suggests that parents and teachers are generally pleased with the uniform experiment and would like to see the mandatory clothing continue. Students, however, registered widespread dissatisfaction with the concept of the uniform, the quality of the clothing and the possibility of the uniform remaining in place. While more than 83 per cent of parents and more than 90 per cent of teachers expressed support for continuing with a uniform, more than 70 per cent of the Grades 6 to 8 students responding to the survey said they opposed the idea. Parents and teachers typically agreed that the uniform promoted a sense of community, a positive learning environment and a distinct Catholic identity within the two schools. One parent commented, "It promotes pride in the school we attend it is respectful and promotes a strong sense of community." The survey found, however, that students were much less likely to perceive the uniforms as offering any benefit to the school environment. "There is no point of wearing uniforms. It does not make our school more of a community or more Catholic," wrote one student. "What makes our school a community or better Catholics is the way we act towards each other." The main concerns expressed by parents around the uniform were the cost and quality of the clothing. Under the new uniform policy being proposed, any school that wants to bring in a uniform policy must hold a community meeting, develop an action plan to lay out the clothing and cost details of the uniform, and conduct a vote. Approval must be expressed by two-thirds of the voting families in the school for the adoption of a uniform. The uniform policy will be circulated to the school community for comment and will come before the board for approval at a future date.
