OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, March 20, 2009 · 10 Pair accused of scamming regional housing and children's services Two Oakville residents are facing fraud related charges following an investigation by the Halton Regional Police into complaints by Halton Community Housing Corporation and the Halton Children's Services Division. Police said the investigation began in April of 2007 and concluded in October of 2008 with Amende Violet Okojie, 31, accused of defrauding the housing subsidy, provided by the Halton Community Housing Corporation, of more than $14,000. Okojie is also alleged to have defrauded the child care subsidy, provided by the Halton Children's Services Division, of more than $17,000. A separate investigation that began in January of 2007 and ended in November of 2008 has also resulted in Irene Johnson, 41, being accused of defrauding the child care subsidy out of more than $20,000. In both cases police note the charges relate to documents and declarations made to the two agencies. While police would not comment specifically on the two cases, they did point out that in such instances the fraud charge is usually the result of the defendant not declaring all their income when they apply for money from the government. Some defendants have even stated that a child's father is not in the picture and is not providing financial support when in fact he is providing support. Okojie is facing two counts of fraud over $5,000. Johnson is facing a single count of fraud over $5,000. The Regional Municipality of Halton www.halton.ca Daylight burglars targeting Oakville homes Halton police urge residents to be vigilant following 20 residential break-ins throughout Oakville. The break-ins, which started in November and have continued to the present, take place in daylight hours with the culprits forcing open the home's front doors in order to gain entry while the owner is away. Once inside the culprits ransack the home and target high-end jewelry, watches, laptop computers, cameras and passport documents. After they have what they came for the suspects usually exit through the rear door of the home. Witnesses have observed several suspicious males around the area prior to the break-ins. The culprits have also been seen escaping in a variety of different vehicles. Police are asking residents to keep a lookout for suspicious people or vehicles on their streets. This is of the greatest of importance as some homes have been broken into moments after the owners have left, leading police to believe the suspects may be watching the home before the robbery. Anyone who observes anything suspicious in relation to these incidents is asked to contact police at 905-878-5511. If the situation becomes an emergency residents are asked to call 911. The Halton Regional Police Service is continuing to investigate these incidents. Anyone with information related to them is asked to contact the Oakville Criminal Investigations Bureau at 905-825-4777, ext. 2215 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
