OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, March 20, 2009 · 18 Firefighters dinner hot item at Do You Believe in Magic? When Oakville Firefighters show up at the third annual Do You Believe in Magic?'gala fundraiser on Saturday, March 28, it won't be to douse the flames but instead, to help auction off a very special dinner. The winning bidder will receive a certificate good for a four course dinner for eight people, prepared, cooked and served by the firefighters. The firefighter's dinner is one of the highlights of this annual event held at Rattlesnake Point Golf Club. The event raises money for Toronto's Sick Children's Hospital, the hospital that saved the life of Oakville teen Sydney Clark, who was stricken with Reyes Syndrome four years ago. The Do You Believe in Magic? fundraiser has raised more than $70,000 for the Critical Care Unit in the past two years. Organizer Nancy Clark says that it is the generosity and dedication of family, friends, businesses and groups like the firefighters who help make the event a success. "It is great for everyone to see that our Oakville firefighters are not only recognized for their bravery but also for their amazing culinary skills," Clark said. Last year's winning dinner went to a group of friends who pooled their money on the night of the fundraiser when they heard about the appealing auction item. "We thought it would be a lot of fun to have dinner made for us" said Burlington resident, Shannon McGlynn, "But when five gorgeous guys came and cooked up the most delicious meal, we all agreed that it was beyond our expectations." The menu consisted of a shrimp and tomato appetizer, a mixed green salad with warm pear slices, candied pecans and a homemade dressing. The main course was medallion steak, risotto and asparagus and for dessert, crepes with blueberries, strawberries and chocolate sauce. Do You Believe in Magic? is on Saturday, March 28 at Rattlesnake Point Golf Club in Milton. The evening consists of a dinner, live and silent auction and entertainment. Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn is the Master of Ceremonies and will help celebrate Earth Hour, plus make the draw for a trip to Hawaii donated by Westjet. Tickets are still available at $85 each and can be ordered from Debbie McGill at 905-847-5532. Visit www.believeinmagic.org for more information.
