OMBA adds three tournaments Baseball Oakville's tournament schedule will be busier than ever this summer. The Oakville Minor Baseball Association has added three events -- two select tournaments and the peewee provincial championships -- to its long-standing roster of five rep tournaments. "It's fantastic for Baseball Oakville and for the town for us to be able to host a larger number of tournaments, which will bring many more competitive teams here to match up against our own squads and to see what our great community has to offer," said OMBA president John Holloway. "We couldn't do this without a large, growing and dedicated group of volunteers from our association." The peewee provincials will be contested Sept. 4-6, while the select tournaments will be held June 12-14 (mosquito) and July 17-19 (peewee). Rep tournaments will be held May 29-31 (minor peewee), June 5-7 (minor bantam), July 10-12 (minor mosquito), July 24-26 (minor midget) and Sept. 17-20 (midget Cannon Cup). Garvin, Ruhl top lefty rinks Bob Garvin's Dixie rink and Tina Ruhl's East York team were the men's and women's champions at the Lefthanders Curling Championships last weekend at Oakville Curling Club. Garvin's squad, which also includes Tom Viegandt, Bill Matheson and Glen Darling, defeated Oakville's Brian Sheridan, Richard Sammons, Bernie Poirier and Henry Vanburgsteden in the men's final. In the women's side, Ayr's Joy Wright was gunning for her 10th title but was downed by Ruhl, Beth Woolnough, Virginia Warren and Marsha Speevak. Wright has won the event twice as a skip and seven times as a vice for Nancy Schmidt. Oakville Curling Club teams were not shut out at the tournament, however. Cynthia Quigley, Lisa Coulman, Cathy MacIntosh and Lynn Downey won the ladies' consolation; Lessia Parks, Ruth Alexander, Janet Lucas and Cheryl vander Kroon won the ladies' second event; Bruce Webster, Greg Ramier, Doug Pole and Jamie Anderson won the men's third event; and Lew Falconer, Dave Haigh, Don Goddard and Jason Massey won the men's fifth event. Both Falconer and Goddard have played in all 36 Lefthanders Curling Championships. The four-day tournament consisted of 56 teams from Scotland, the United States, Quebec and Ontario. Masters swimmers medal Oakville Masters swimmers combined to win 17 medals, including seven gold, at the Ontario Masters Provincial Championships recently in Ottawa.
