Sprinkler system contains blaze By Tina Depko OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF 5 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Saturday, April 11, 2009 h A sprinkler system is being credited for containing a blaze that broke out in a rear storage unit believed to be owned by House of Health at 407 Speers Rd. on Wednesday afternoon. The 9-1-1 call came in at 3:59 p.m., according to Platoon Chief Keith Cassey with the Oakville Fire Department. When the fire department arrived, the sprinkler system was already operating, which contained the fire to the unit. Flames were still shooting from the building, but firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze. "When we arrived, there were flames emitting from the window above the side entrance and the glass was broken out," Cassey said. "The sprinkler system did keep the fire in check. We still had to gain entry and use more water to put it out. The sprinklers kept it from spreading." There were no injuries reported and it is believed there was no one in the storage unit at the time. The cause of the fire is believed to be a cigarette. "There is evidence of cigarette material being accumulated over a long period of time in that area, so it is a common place people have been extinguishing their cigarettes. We are looking at the possibility that a lit cigarette might have gone astray and got inside the building somehow," said Cassey. Cassey said there was minor damage to the unit and its contents. "The fire was confined to the storage area and there was minor damage to the structure itself, but there wasn't a lot of damage to the contents," he said. The experience was unsettling for others working in the twostorey building at 407 Speers Rd. Rob Michie, marketing manager for VideoComm, said the smoke alarm notified him of the fire. The business is located directly about the unit where the blaze started. "I'm glad we got out because we were right above it," he said. "We heard our fire alarms go off upstairs and when we started to leave, there was smoke in the hallways, so we all ran down the side. I've been here three years and nothing like this has ever happened before." The fire will be further investigated to confirm the cause of the blaze.
