Beaver named Ontario's top community newspaper four years in a row It's a four-peat. For the fourth year in a row, The Oakville Beaver has won the prestigious General Excellence Award in the top circulation Class (40,000 and over) in the Ontario Community Newspaper Association's (OCNA) Better Newspapers competition. Since the OCNA started keeping records in 1974, only one other newspaper (Mississauga News, 1978-81) has captured top General Excellence category four years in a row. It also marks the eighth OCNA Best Newspaper Award for The Oakville Beaver since 1974. The award was presented at the OCNA's annual awards night in Toronto on Friday. In a close competition that featured a field of 22 large circulation community papers, the Beaver edged out two other Metroland Media newspapers for the award -- Oshawa This Week (second) and The Burlington Post (third). Judging is based on 11 categories ranging from community news and photography to advertising content and production quality. Besides earning high marks in each of the editorial categories, the Beaver outpolled its nearest competitor, Oshawa This Week, by 22 points in the three advertising categories.
