Fire dept. turns 100 The Oakville Fire Department is turning 100 on Thursday and the Town is throwing them a party befitting the occasion. The festivities will begin in Town Hall's North Atrium, located at 1225 Trafalgar Rd., at 10 a.m. with a cake cutting amid a display of historic memorabilia from the fire department's past. "The Oakville Fire Department helps keep Oakville one of Canada's safest towns," said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. "For 100 years, they have protected our community. We recognize them for their achievement and thank them for their vital service." The Mayor, members of council, Fire Chief Richard Boyes and past and present members of the Oakville Fire Department will attend the birthday ceremony, which will showcase such history as past equipment, uniforms and a 1948 antique pumper truck. "We are very proud of our 100 years of service to our community," said Boyes. "Celebrating this event is about recognizing our origins and honouring those who served before us." The fire department is also honouring its centennial anniversary with a special commemorative history book entitled, Reflections of a Proud Heritage. The book will be released later this summer. "This book has been in the works for five years," said John Percy, fire prevention officer and history book committee member. "Contributions by firefighters, retired department members and citizens went into the creation of this book. It is thanks to all their time and hard work that we will have the first book chronicling the history of the Oakville Fire Department." Copies of the book can be ordered at the birthday celebration with advanced orders costing $35 until May 30 and $45 after.
