He was an avid hockey player and golfer and was also an accomplished student, enrolling in the University of Victoria where he continued to excel...for a while. "Second year something happened, we'll never really know what. I don't know the facts behind it, but Terry decided for some reason that he was going to take a couple shortcuts to success," said McLean. "He got involved with a couple of guys he shouldn't have gotten involved with and he thought, `I can make some pretty good money if I just distribute little bits of cocaine around campus,' and so he did." McLean said his nephew's actions did not go unnoticed. At one point, two men engaged in conversation, speaking about how they knew where there was a cocaine dealer who, they theorized, must have hundreds of thousands of dollars just laying around. The man who would be convicted of Terry McLean's murder overheard this conversation and formulated a plan. "Terry was asleep on his couch at home at 3 a.m. when three guys dressed in black with black hoods over their heads kicked in his door and beat him to death with a baseball bat," said McLean. "The coroner said they hit him over 40 times with a baseball bat. You can't imagine the photographs I've had to look at. You can't imagine the grief of watching Terry's mother as she watched Terry's casket rolled into a hearse and taken away. I never want to see anything that terrible ever again." Terry's murder, which netted the assailants only $200, resulted in the arrest of three men with two being convicted of breaking and entering while the ring leader was convicted of second degree murder. McLean said these convictions only took place because someone thought enough to call the Victoria Crime Stoppers and report they had seen a car the night of the murder. The description of that car led police to the man who is now serving time in a B.C. prison for Terry's murder. "He's eligible for a parole hearing in 13 years," said McLean. "In 13 years and one day, I'm in B.C. making sure he doesn't get out." While McLean is grateful someone called Crime Stoppers to bring his nephew's killer to justice he wishes someone had made the call earlier and reported what Terry was doing. In a conversation with the prosecutor, who tried Terry's case, McLean asked what would have happened to Terry if a concerned friend had called Crime Stoppers about him. The prosecutor noted that as a first time offender Terry likely would have received a fine and probation. "There would have been some consequences from his parents, but he would be alive. He'd be 26 today," said McLean. "Think about that. If you know someone who's going down the wrong path or is doing some things that are risky, you have a place to turn. If you don't feel you can turn to your parents or to your school or to your clergy and you don't want to go to the police directly, call Crime Stoppers. Your call is an act of love because you could be saving someone's life." No one made that call for Terry even though, McLean noted, many of his friends knew what he was doing. That decision had consequences. "My brother is shattered for life, he will never recover. That was his only son," said McLean. "I had my first grandson arrive last year, he'll never have a grandson. Just let that soak in." Crime Stoppers can be reached at 1 800 222 TIPS (8477) or at www.haltoncrimestoppers.com.
