OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, May 15, 2009 · 8 Halton Region eyes hiring freeze in 2010 Continued from page 1 While noting he would have preferred residents and businesses had a tax break this year rather than having to wait until next, Dennison said he wasn't disappointed council didn't follow his advice last December. "Fortunately, they're recognizing now the best planning estimates (for new population growth) isn't going to be what's happening for the next two to three years," he said. With the slowing economy affecting the construction industry, regional staff now expect only a 1.5 per cent increase in prop- Proposed Revisions to Road Corridor By-laws Intention to Amend and Establish New Rates and Fees In accordance with the Municipal Act, 2001, the Town of Oakville hereby gives notice of its proposed new road corridor user rates and fees for 2009 and to pass an associated by-law. To compensate for that lack of new revenue and also fulfill council's goal of a zero per cent hike in taxes and water bills next year, regional staff have outlined a number of measures to find savings in next year's budget. They include a complete hiring freeze in 2010, delaying construction on new capital projects or refinancing them with reserve funds rather than taxes, and postponing a number of initiatives such as the expansion of Halton Region's headquarters and new waste diversion programs. However, the regional report states the tax and rate freeze won't mean a cut in existing service levels. Among the 2009 employee cuts, the Region's health department will only get to hire four of the 16 new employees approved in this year's budget. "We will manage," said Halton's Medical Officer of Health Dr. Bob Nosal. "I can assure the public there is sufficient infrastructure within the public health department to deal with an issue like (H1N1 virus)." Included in the budget directions report is a request for the Halton Police Services Board, Royal Botanical Gardens and the conservation authorities including Conservation Halton to consider a zero per cent tax increase when they prepare their 2010 budgets. Though partially funded by regional taxes, those boards prepare their own budgets, not Halton Region. Regional chairman Gary Carr said the police board would be setting its budget directions in July. United front needed to stop power plant Continued from page 6 found out about the pollution and new plant adding 3,000 tons a year to it. Obviously this, as well as health, may be an issue in the future. Who will want their families to live in a toxic mess? Mayor Hazel McCallion did say "stay out of Mississauga" but did not say it is okay to build in Oakville. She feels very strongly power plant should not be in either and that it is not even needed. Mississauga has Miranet.ca for more info on issue and some resident associations in Oakville are trying to get word out. It would be great to work together before it's too late.
