Cash for aging at home Ontario is investing more into its Aging at Home program -- through the Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) -- to help more seniors stay at home longer and reduce pressure on Emergency rooms. According to Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn, Oakville and Halton should see $3.4 million that's part of a provincewide investment of $272 million to help seniors receive needed health services at home and in their community. The Mississauga Halton LHIN is receiving $19.1 million -- a hike of $11.4 million -- to help seniors receive services at home instead of in hospital. The Aging at Home program combines traditional health services like home care and supportive housing with new local approaches. There's good reason for the big spending, too. It is estimated Ontario's senior population will double in the next 16 years. The Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) indicates seniors, awaiting access to appropriate care elsewhere, occupy almost 19 per cent of hospital beds in the province. So the provincial government is investing $1.1 billion over four years in the Aging at Home Strategy. The funding will help decrease the number of alternate level of care (ALC) patients, who are in hospitals waiting to be discharged, to move on to more appropriate care. The Mississauga Halton LHIN is also receiving: · $1.2 million to invest in local alternate levels of care solutions. · $4.3 million for increased home care, personal support and homemaking services provided by Community Care Access Centres (CCAC). · $250,000 for nurse-led outreach teams to provide more care to patients in long-term care homes and help them avoid transfers to the hospital ER. "By providing more services to seniors at home and in their communities, these investments have the added benefit of reducing emergency room wait times," said Flynn.
