3 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, May 21, 2009 SHARING THE SPIRIT 2009 Halton Catholic District School Board honours Oakville students In April, the Halton Catholic District School Board held its annual Sharing the Spirit, a special evening that recognized one student from each of the board's elementary and secondary schools. The honoured students are representative of exceptional qualities in at least two of the following areas: Catholic leadership, family commitment, involvement in school affairs, involvement in community activities and dedication to a difficult situation or task. · Carly Mulligan, Holy Trinity Secondary School, Special Education Advisory Committee Spirit of Inclusion Secondary School Recipient: Carly is the kind of student who does not permit her learning disability to limit her academically or in her commitment to school life. Her enthusiasm shows in her involvement in myriad activities, including sports, school council, organizing and participating in fundraisers for community organizations, all while maintaining a high academic average. Carly is also an active participant in the church and community outside of school and is regularly involved in the Christmas drive for needy families at Mary Mother of God Church in Oakville. · Laura Drennan, Holy Family School: Laura is a devoted student, who will persevere to see difficult challenges through to completion. She brings an empathetic and Christian attitude to everything she does, especially while assisting others making her a role model to all who know her. · Diana Saturno, Holy Trinity Secondary School: Diana is a highly motivated, involved and successful Grade 12 student who plans on attending university in the fall. She is actively involved in her community, parish and school, including Holy Trinity's Justice and Peace Committee, the choir, the school's elementary support programs, as a prefect, the school senate, the school environmental club and more. Diana has volunteered to bring to Holy Trinity, Inside the Dream. Diana showed her leadership as she successfully ran this fundraiser, giving to those in need, so that they may enjoy their school prom and gathered the support of staff and students to a worthy cause. · Joseph Sestito, Mother Teresa School: Through his example, Joseph demonstrates to his classmates the kind of Catholic student of which we can all be proud. He embodies the school philosophy of being kind, respectful and an attentive listener through his interactions a daily basis, Lindsey displays many of the essential themes of the Catholic faith, including dignity of the human person, as well as being a strong contributor in Religion and Family Life class and discussions. She is a conscientious young person who has demonstrated many leadership qualities within the classroom and school, as she is involved in many different school activities, including: Student Council, the senior basketball team and as an office assistant. · Maggie Delany, St. Bernadette School: Margaret is a Christ-centred student, who evokes commitment to school activities and to the spiritual life of the school. As a member of Student Council, Chair of the yearbook committee, athlete and leader in social justice initiatives, she demonstrates an excellent attitude and spirit in dealing with challenges. Margaret is inclusive in her interactions with others, recognizing the uniqueness and value of all individuals, treating students and staff with respect and dignity. She advocates strongly for the individual, for her school, for her church and for her community exemplifying Catholic values. Maggie does transform those around her to aspire to their full potential. Her spirit is contagious. · Rachael Rishworth, St. Dominic School: Rachael is an enthusiastic, compassionate, committed young woman, who consistently shares her many beautiful gifts both in class and in extra-curricular activities. She is a role model to staff and students in bringing the Gospel values to life through involvement, inclusion and social responsibility. · Emma Munden, St. Ignatius of Loyola Secondary School: Emma, a Grade 12 Honour Roll student, is involved in her parish life and donates her time and effort to charitable works and leadership roles in the school including the DREAMS project and Eucharistic ministry. · Claudia Timoteo, St. James School: Claudia is a Grade 8 student at St. James School, who demonstrates commitment to her faith through her kind and caring actions. She is a relied upon volunteer for a variety of activities within the school. Claudia continually strives for excellence in all that she does. · Maryo Ibrahim, St. Joan of Arc School: Maryo consistently leads by example, contributing selflessly and with the utmost respect to all others within and beyond our school community. Through his actions, Maryo truly demonstrates commitment to the Catholic values fundamental to our faith-based education.
