9 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, June 5, 2009 Councillors winging it to Whistler By Tim Foran METROLAND WEST MEDIA GROUP At least 14 Halton-area council members will be winging it to Whistler this weekend for the annual conference of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, a political contingent larger than that being sent by the City of Toronto. Six of the council members will represent the upper municipality of Halton Region, including regional chair Gary Carr and Halton Hills regional councillor Clark Somerville, who is Halton's representative on the FCM's board. Oakville regional councillor Fred Oliver was originally scheduled to attend, but has dropped out due to health issues, though regional council is looking to send a replacement in his stead. Three of the four lower tier municipalities will also be sending representatives, including four from Oakville, two from both Milton and Halton Hills, but none from Burlington. Burlington regional councillor Carol D'Amelio will be heading to the B.C. resort town as part of the Region's delegation. "I think it's important that at least one representative (from Burlington) goes," said D'Amelio. "If we had more councillors, probably some more would go," she added. Unlike other Halton municipalities, Burlington's seven council members serve both the City and the Region as there is no additional complement of local-level councillors. One representative is not enough, according to Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. The Mayor said he would have liked to join the five Oakville councillors that are attending but had to refrain due to family health issues. "In the past, I think there's been a tendency to just send one person and say it's taken care of," explained Burton. "You don't play hockey with just one player. We do ourselves in Oakville a favour when we field a strong team." Burton said when it comes to municipal issues, the provincial and federal governments listen to concerns raised by the FCM - a lobbying group for Canada's towns, cities, and regions -- more than individual municipalities. Somerville agreed, noting the upper levels of government have focused much of the current economic stimulus spending on municipal See Whistler page 13 Chrysler Built and I ROB 2009 Dodge Journey R/T 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT 2009 Jeep Patriot Ltd.
