Summer art camp going green Summer art camp ArtOn-Location in Oakville is going green this year. While instructors teach the children art, this new program will also teach them how to save the environment. The children will be taught themes such as Save the Planet, The Ecological Footprint Dude, The Creative Footprinter, and The Reusable Artist. Children will be instructed by professional artists in a different medium every day, not only to train their eyes to see shape, light values and colour from the outdoor surroundings at the Oakville Harbour, but also to create awareness how to keep the environment as beautiful as it was created. The camp welcomes students from age five through to teenagers. For information or to register for Art-OnLocation, go online to www.dawnangela.com, or send an e-mail to artist@dawnangela.com or call 905-849-7966. It offers a broad overview of the carpet production process, ideal for anyone considering the purchase of an Oriental rug. Admission to the seminar is free, but reservations are strongly encouraged. Please call Ten Thousand Villages at 905-337-2377 for reservation information. Ten Thousand Villages rugs are exquisitely designed and crafted by an artisan group in Pakistan known as Bunyaad (formerly JAKCISS Oriental Rugs). Bunyaad a name meaning "foundation" in Urdu works to create strong foundations in the villages of Pakistan by paying a fair wage to its over 850 artisan families. By earning a living wage, artisans can build better homes and living conditions, create educational opportunities for children, foster greater understanding between religious and ethnic groups, and spread peace through equal opportunity for all. These are the foundations created by Fair Trade. Rug artisan Parveen Bibi moved to Islamabad with her family of two sons and one daughter when her husband got a construction job in the city. Initially, Parveen did cleaning to add to the family's income. When she was diagnosed with a leg cancer that necessitated amputation, however, she was no longer able to work. While her husband found a job as a brick maker, Parveen had trouble finding work. Thankfully, someone in a neighbouring village told a Bunyaad rug supervisor about Parveen's situation. Since Parveen had learned rug-knotting from her parents when she was a girl, Bunyaad installed a loom in her home. Remarkably, after a number of years spent away from rug-knotting, Parveen is now working on a very fine quality Bokhara carpet. With pride, Parveen explains that she will soon have the pattern of her rug memorized. As it is, she only refers to the pattern for help with the medallion and corners.
