OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, June 12, 2009 · 8 Low-income renters can find relief at Rent Bank Ontario is assisting low-income families who have missed a rent payment avoid eviction in Halton. Under the provincial Rent Bank program, a tenant who is facing eviction for non-payment of rent can apply to the local rent bank to receive financial assistance. If a tenant's application is approved, the outstanding rent is paid directly to the landlord on behalf of the tenant. This year, the province is providing $5 million to rent banks across the province, with $126,305 being allocated to the Region of Halton. As part of the Poverty Reduction Strategy, the Province has announced stabilized funding for the Rent Bank program with a dedicated commitment of $5 million per year. The Poverty Reduction strategy sets a hard target of reducing the number of children living in poverty by 25 per cent over 5 years -- that's 90,000 kids. "Short-term arrears is the most common reason tenants with lower incomes lose their homes and are forced into shelters" said Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn. "This new funding for the rent bank in Halton ensures we can continue to help low-income tenants avoid eviction for non-payment of rent due to an unforeseen crisis," said Flynn. The province established the Provincial Rent Bank Program in 2004. To date, the program has prevented more than 18,700 lowincome households from being evicted due to a missed rent payment. Vision To be the most livable town in Canada NOTICE OF STUDY COMPLETION Active Transportation Master Plan The Town of Oakville has prepared a Master Plan consistent with Phases 1 and 2 of the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment. Master plans are long-range plans that integrate infrastructure requirements for existing and future land uses with environmental assessment principles. While the Master Plan addresses need and justification at a broad level, more detailed studies related to some infrastructure components of the Master Plan are expected to be undertaken at a later date as part of Municipal Class EAs for other Town and Halton Region infrastructure projects. The study area for the Active Transportation Master Plan (ATMP) includes all of the Town of Oakville. The Master Plan is intended to guide the Town as it works with Halton Region and adjacent municipalities (Burlington, Milton and Mississauga), Ontario Parks, Ontario Ministry of Transportation, Halton Region Conservation Authority and other partners over the next 10+ years and beyond to implement a comprehensive pedestrian system and on and off-road town-wide cycling network while minimizing environmental impacts. The recommended Master Plan is based on the study findings and incorporates comments from the public, stakeholders, agencies and Town staff. The draft Active Transportation Master Plan was presented to Community Services Committee on May 26, 2009 and was approved in principle pending a 30 day public review period. The Draft Active Transportation Master Plan is available for review online at www.oakville.ca/activea2b.htm. Or at Town Hall, 1125 Trafalgar Road, in the Engineering and Construction Department. Please forward any comments to Mr. Chris Clapham at the Town of Oakville by July 10, 2009. Thereafter, the Master Plan will be reviewed and revised taking into consideration the comments which are received from the public. The recommended Final Active Transportation Master Plan will then be presented to Town Council for approval and formal adoption.
