Bantam Angels in top form as U16 nationals approach It doesn't appear like the Oakville bantam 1 Angels will look out of place when they host the national girls' fastball championships this summer. The Angels overcame losses in their first two games to win a recent tournament in Michigan, becoming only the second-ever Oakville squad to win a Class A tournament in the United States. Janet Leung singled home Brittany Parkes to snap a 4-4 tie in the fifth inning as the Angels edged the host Mt. Clemens Vengeance 54 in the championship game. Oakville's other runs came on RARE FEAT: The Oakville bantam 1 Angels' championship showing at a recent tournament in Michigan made them doubles by Sam Morneau, Lauren only the second-ever Oakville team to win a Class A fastpitch tournament in the United States. Tyttle, Lauren Bellefeuille and Jaime Paton. The Angels took a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning, but Mt. Clemens rallied to tie the game in the top of the fifth. Once the Angels went ahead again, Morneau made the lead stand up, retiring six of the final seven batters to earn the victory. The Angels lost their first two games in the tournament, both by one run. They rebounded to blank the top-seeded Michigan Pioneers 5-0 in the semifinal, led by a twohitter by Parkes. Other members of the team are Jennifer Bergie, Taylor Brown, Jocelyn Carabott, Caitlin Decina, Alex DeMedeiros-Smith, Jennifer Simpson and Jennifer Wilcox. The Angels, who have now qualified for the NSA World Series for either the 2009 or 2010 season, will shoot for a 16-under national championship July 28-Aug. 2 at Trafalgar Park. 37 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, June 26, 2009 Mother Teresa leads way at Catholic meet Mother Teresa won six of the 25 gold medals earned by local students at this year's Halton Catholic District School Board's system track-and-field meet, held at Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary. Sarah Nixon (atom girls' 400metre), Ashi Paul-Ebiai (bantam girls' 200m), Sam Medeiros (atom boys' softball throw) and Samantha Hartley (atom girls' softball throw) were Mother Teresa's individual event-winners. The school added two more gold in relay, winning the atom girls' and atom boys' races. St. Bernadette, St. Matthew and St. Joseph each had three winning entries. Colin Clarke (bantam boys' 800m), Andrew Martins (midget boys' 60m) and Christian Critelli (atom boys' 100m) won for St. Bernadette; Kristin O'Neill (tyke girls' 100m), Daniela Paniccia (atom girls' long jump) and John Whaley (bantam boys' softball throw) were St. Matthew's winners; and Brooke Robertson (tyke girls' 60m), Kasia Greye (midget girls' long jump) and the atom mixed relay team were victorious for St. Joseph. Competitors in the Catholic system meet qualified by placing in the top two of their events at regional meets in Burlington, north Halton and Oakville. OAK thrives under the spotlight Competing in a meet that featured 14 U.S. Olympians, including Michael Phelps, Oakville Aquatic Club (OAK) swimmers fit right in. Annie Harrison made the biggest splash among OAK swimmers at the recent Charlotte Ultraswim competition in North Carolina, earning bronze in the 200-metre backstroke. Harrison's performance set a new national age group record for 13-14 girls' 200m backstroke, breaking the previous standard set by Nancy Garapick in 1976. Harrison, Julie Calvert, Marni Oldershaw, Mack Darragh and Brody Dyson represented OAK at the meet. OAK teammates Zack Chetrat and Samuel Curtis competed for Team Ontario, helping the province finish second overall behind Club Wolverine. OAK finished 21st out of the 74 registered clubs and unattached swimmers at the meet. Calvert was fifth in the 200m breaststroke and sixth in the 100m breaststroke. Curtis placed sixth in the 200m butterfly. "It was really nice to see our young OAK swimmers bear up so well under the spotlight," said OAK head coach Alex Wallingford. "The American media was everywhere. Each time you turned around, you were watching another Olympic medalist race, so having all five swimmers reach at least one of the finals swim sessions is a credit to their focus in the morning heats." Phelps was competing in his first meet since winning eight gold medals at last year's Olympic Summer Games. The Charlotte Ultraswim also drew competitors from Wales, Honduras, Switzerland, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, France, Brazil and England. CATHOLIC SYSTEM MEETRESULTS 60m Tyke boys - 2.
