OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, July 9, 2009 · 12 Residents challenged to boost Terry Fox Run donations Local residents are being challenged to honour Terry Fox's memory by donating $1 to the Terry Fox Run -- and boost dwindling donations. Over the last few years, the money raised at the local Terry Fox Run has been declining. While Terry Fox's memory remains strong in people's minds and he continues to be a hero to Canadians, there are many charity runs competing for charitable dollars today -- as the economy ails. Local organizers of the Terry Fox Run believe in miracles and are challenging each Oakville resident to donate $1 to the Terry Fox Run. The Terry Fox Run Oakville committee will have a display at Downtown Oakville's Midnight Madness on Friday July 17. In October, 1979, Terry Fox wrote a letter asking for support saying, "We need your help. The people in cancer clinics all over the world need people who believe in miracles." "When I started this run, I said that if we all gave one dollar, we'd have $22 million for cancer research, and I don't care man, there's no reason that isn't possible. No reason," said Fox. The Terry Fox Run is different than other charitable events as it is to honour Fox's dream to ease the suffering of cancer patients. There is no corporate sponsorship and it is run 100 per cent by volunteers. The run is also well known for its fundraising accountability -- boasting one of the lowest administrative and fundraising costs in the non-profit sector, with 87 cents of every dollar raised going to cancer research. The new Terry Fox Research Institute distributes funds for vital research projects -- clinical research that is seeing results, "Terry's dream was simple. All he asked was that each person give $1," said Ralph Robinson, chair of the Oakville Terry Fox Run. "If Oakville believes in Terry's dream, our community run will raise close to $170,000 this year," said Robinson. Oakville's Terry Fox Run committee doesn't just work when the run takes place, but is actively fundraising all year. The 29th Annual Terry Fox Run will take place on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 10 a.m. at Abbey Park Secondary School, adjacent to the Glen Abbey Recreation Centre. While many students participate at their schools, entire families are encouraged to participate in the Terry Fox Run on Sept. 13 to show their support. For information on the Terry Fox Run, contact Robinson at 905-827-7659.
