Continued from page 9 "While I got every job I applied for, he had to do that much more to get his skills noticed. The irony is he's probably more motivated than me, but wasn't perceived as employee material simply because he wore ripped clothes." Frustration about such experiences led the committee to draft a poster that asks potential employers `Who Would You Hire?' The caption shows two youths proceeding down a walkway with the teen clad in baggy clothes, a money sign medallion and a sideways hat stopping to help an elderly woman who had dropped her purse. The teen's more clean-cut counterpart just continues walking. "Respect is a two-way street," said Lynn. "Everyone says respect others and your surroundings, but when you're not getting respect in return, what's the point? The truth is most youth are fundamentally good people who are just looking for a chance. By looking beyond appearance, you can find so much more." The three posters will be making appearances in schools throughout Oakville and Safe Start: Beginner Driver Education CLASSROOM 25 hrs in-class Evenings & Weekends Small class sizes Use of interactive tools to keep students engaged - 6 hrs simulation - Adverse Weather effects - Risk free environment - Focused on highway, urban & city driving New police poster aimed at youths. may make their way to other public venues such as malls and plazas. A full usage of the water capturing devices has the potential to reduce water consumption by over 1.2 million litres each time they're used, according to a staff memo presented to regional council's public works committee last week. "That's a fraction of what we use in a day," said Kiyoshi Oka, the Region's director of water services. "What we do gain is the value from an increased awareness (of water conservation)." According to the memo, 35 per cent of the rain barrels were sold in Burlington, 31 per cent in Oakville, 16 per cent in Halton Hills and 18 per cent in Milton. The Region sold the barrels at the wholesale cost of $45, about half what would be charged for them at a retail store. The Region didn't provide a subsidy for the barrels, though it did have to pay for staff time and advertising of the pilot program. This winter, regional staff plan to survey residents to evaluate frequency of use of the barrels. It will report back to council with recommendations on a future rain barrel sales program.
