The U18 junior women and senior women will take on the Burlington Centaurs -- in prom dresses from the '80s -- for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. "This event raises funds and awareness for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, which is a very important cause," said Vicky Boateng, a member of the senior women's team. "This is our biggest event of the year and everyone loves it." This is the fourth year of the event and the dresses keep getting uglier, laughed Boateng. "Everyone goes the whole nine yards to find the ugliest dresses," said Boateng, who will be playing in the event for the second time. "We go to thrift stores and raid our parents' closets." The more damage done to the dresses in the game, the better. "Nothing feels better than ripping a big ugly bow off another girl's dress," she laughed. There will be a high participation rate among female Crusaders players, with about 20 juniors and 40 seniors. The Centaurs are also bringing a large contingent of players. There are many reasons it is such a popular event among the players, according to Kim Hunter, an 11-year member of the Crusaders and team captain who will be taking the field for the senior women's team. "The 1980s prom dresses -- when else do we get to wear hot pink with shoulder pads, our great judges -- male players from the club who also dress up in their prom dress, the selection of the prom queen from each team and everyone having such a good time," said Hunter, who has played in the match for the past three years. "It is a little difficult to play in a dress, but we tuck the skirts into the back of our shorts and dig in," said Boateng. "This event is also about raising awareness of sport in Oakville, especially of girls' sports. Girls are good at rugby and we can hold our own." The event usually raises between $500 and $700 per year for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Crusaders' players say they hope awareness of the event has grown and that even more people will come out in support. "Breast cancer affects so many people in our community that everyone has been touched by it," said Hunter, who is also one of the coaches of the U15 girls' team. "By coming out to this event, not only do you support an amazing cause that is working to find ways to treat and cure this disease, but you also get to see a rocking game of rugby, some really `beautiful' dresses and you support one of the fastest growing sports for women in Canada." Lynsey Wilson, who has been a Crusader for five years and plays on the seniors' team, said it is a very unique fundraiser. "It is probably the most fun and entertaining way to support the cause -- definitely a good laugh," she said. Admission is by donation at the gate. There will also be a charity raffle. Tax receipts will be available for donations over $20 made by cheque (payable to Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation). Each team member also pays $10 to play in the event, which goes directly to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Game time is at 7 p.m. for the U18 junior women and at 8 p.m. for the senior women at the Oakville Crusaders Park, 2214 Ninth Line (north of Upper Middle Road). The event runs rain or shine. Spectators can watch from a sheltered clubhouse in the event of rain. Food, including barbecued fare and pizza, as well as beverages will be sold on site.
