OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, August 7, 2009 · 8 Market moves temporarily to make room for jazz festival The Burloak Canoe Club is up for an egg-citing reward for Community Spirit this Saturday. After the canoe club agreed to host the Harbourside Organic Farmers Market while the market's downtown site hosts the jazz festival, the market is saying thanks. It will host a complimentary 100-mile country-style, farm fresh breakfast to thank the club staff and members tomorrow (Saturday) from 9:30-11 a.m. The club makes its home at 160 Water St. As the Ontario harvest season enters its prime, farmers and customers won't miss the weekly market, which is regularly located in Centennial Square (Navy and Lakeshore) -- a spot to be occupied this weekend by the 2009 Downtown Oakville Jazz Festival (Aug. 7-9). The popular jazz festival is one of Downtown Oakville's biggest events of the year and space is at a premium. When market executive director Carrie Watson contacted the canoe club to ask if it they might be able to accommodate the farmers on the morning of Aug. 8, head coach Adam Oldershaw was happy to oblige. "Our club has a competition in Welland (for the Western Ontario Division Trials) on the weekend of the 8 and 9," he said. "It might actually work out that there are less people than usual using the club and space that weekend, which could help. We would be happy to host the market on our site." To say thanks, the farmers will be hosting the breakfast for the club staff and members. Adding to the community spirit, Craig Nazareth, executive chef and owner of The Rude Native Bistro, and staff will be volunteering their cooking and services. The Burloak Canoe Club is home to five members who will be representing Canada at the 2009 World Championships. They include Mark Oldershaw, Christopher Pellini, Brady Reardon, Aaron Rublee and Adam van Koeverden. "I think this is a very exciting thing, and is a win-win for both of our groups. I appreciate the offer of breakfast and I am sure those members that are at the club will truly appreciate it," Commodore Robert Dance said. A map and directions are available at www.burloakcanoe.com/contact-us. The Harbourside Organic Farmers Market runs Saturdays during the harvest season.
