7 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, August 21, 2009 Smoking in movies tied to rise in young smokers: Region From the debonair cigarette holders used by Audrey Hepburn's Holly Golightly to the dangling from the lips cigarettes of Humphrey Bogart's Rick Blaine, there has been no shortage of iconic smokers in cinema. However, according to Halton Region's health department, images of smoking in movies -- especially absent visuals of the real, harmful impact of tobacco use -- are tied to an increase in young smokers. The department -- along with other health units in the central west region of Ontario -- has joined a regional social marketing campaign dubbed `Don't Be A Target!' to educate the public about that correlation and encourage them to take action via the website www.youthtarget.ca. "When youth see their favourite celebrity smoking on the big screen, they are 16 times more likely to have positive attitudes about smoking in the future," Halton Medical Officer of Health Dr. Bob Nosal said in a media release. The health department highlighted recent studies by the U.S. National Cancer Institute and the World Health Organization (WHO) that conclude the relationship exists. The WHO report, SmokeFree Movies: From Evidence to Action, cites studies that show "When youth see their favourite celebrity smoking on the big screen, they are 16 times more likely to have positive attitudes about smoking in the future." Dr. Bob Nosal, Halton medical officer of health movies and notes whether they include images that promote smoking, show smoking with negative consequences, or are smoke free. Its website www.smokefreemovies.ucsf.edu attaches a rating of `Promotes Smoking' to the current release Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, for instance. Halton Region is distributing posters and information cards to local youth venues in the area, and will show a short video clip on the issue at two Oakville youth centres, Encore Oakville Cinemas "smoking in movies misleads youth into thinking that tobacco use is normal, acceptable, socially beneficial and more common than it really is," according to a June 1 media release from the organization. "The report recommends that all future movies with scenes of smoking should be given an adult rating, with the possible exception of movies that reflect the dangers of tobacco use or that depict smoking by a historical figure who smoked," according to WHO. Halton Region isn't in charge of setting movie ratings. Its campaign is focused on encouraging youths and adults to educate themselves about the relationship between smoking images in movies and the increase in young smokers. The website for the campaign includes a link to the University of California, San Francisco's website Smoke-Free Movies, which analyzes current OAKVILLE TOYOTA Car Show Weekend 2nd Annual A and other venues such as outdoor family movie nights. "Evidence shows that seeing an anti-tobacco message prior to watching a movie with smoking in it will neutralize the negative effect," states the Region's press release. Over the years, Mr. Flynn has placed the health and environmental concerns of his community as a priority. For 24 consecutive years, Mr. Flynn has received the support and trust of the community and his record demonstrates that there is no better person to have at Queen's Park fighting for the people of Oakville. At the rally last month, MPP Flynn's role was applauded heartily when I explained it in my speech. As mayor, I regret the cheap and divisive partisan attacks in last week's letter that will weaken our effort and reduce our chances of success. Continued from page 6 cers actually risk their lives so that the rest of us can live securely and comfortably. Can you say the same for yourself? We are fortunate that Oakville is a very safe place to live, especially when we see the way things are going in the neighbouring cities to the east. We have the courageous and hard-working officers of the Halton Police Service to thank for that, if not for them, Oakville might not be such a safe place to raise a family. So shame on you, Oakville Beaver, for suggesting that we should be upset that the city dares to reward police officers for doing a job I doubt most of us would, or could, do.
