15 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, September 4, 2009 Scout House joins this year's Doors Open lineup T he Oakville Scout House will be a featured site for the first time at Doors Open Oakville on Sept. 26-27. Since its construction in 1926, this small building at 165 Randall St. has been known as the Boy Scouts Hut. Its presence is an important reminder of Oakville's early connection with scouting. The first scouting group began here in 1911, just four years after Lord Baden-Powell founded the Scout Movement. The Doors Open concept had its beginnings in France in 1984. From there it grew to European Heritage Days in 11 countries. Today more than 40 countries worldwide have initiated the program. Each year in Ontario, hundreds of historic buildings, natural spaces and heritage gardens -- some of which are rarely accessible to the public -- open for free as part of Doors Open.
