OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, September 9, 2009 · 26 Festival held across town Continued from page 24 As is tradition, festival organizers have chosen a themed exhibition tied to the year. Since it is 2009, there will be an exhibition called nine lives at Timothy's World Coffee. Participants in the exhibition were invited to create a work based on a painting by Oakville artist Lyn Estall or create their own felinethemed artwork. "This is a national exhibit for the first time and we have entries from across Canada," she said. Recognizing that fibre art can also be wearable, a fashion show featuring clothing by Just for Us Originals will be held on Friday, Oct. 2 at Harbour Banquet and Conference Centre. "It is wearable art, so the clothing will be quite remarkable," Coryell said. Other exhibitions include: Guilded Threads at Oakville Town Hall, Threads That Bind at Sheridan College, Expressions at Abbozzo Gallery, Strands on the Sixteen at in2art Gallery, The Modern Priscilla at Ristorante Julia, Not Your Grannies Quilts at Halton Regional Centre, Words to End All Wars at Oakville Museum, and Fibrications at O'Connor MacLeod Hanna. The artwork is produced by a variety of ages, from elementary school students to the highest calibre of professional artists. This year's age range of artists is eight to 80-plus. Coryell said that it doesn't matter if small BEAUTY & 50% OFF FOIL hands or experienced hands created the work. In her eyes, it is all beautiful. "It is a very stunning medium," she said. "Visitors often want to reach out and touch it since it is so engaging." The festival has grown leaps and bounds since its inception in the 1990s. Coryell was among the artists who founded the event. She said she never imagined it would grow to a 17-day festival that attracts international fibre artists. It takes extensive planning to make the World of Threads Festival a reality. A committee of seven people meets regularly throughout the two years between each festival to bring everything together. More than 60 volunteers donate their time during the festival itself. Volunteers are still needed for this year's event. The show is offering free admission thanks to the generosity of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Town of Oakville, and business and individual donors. Last year, more than 1,000 people came out to the festival and this year, more visitors are expected. The economic spinoff to the community for this year's festival is predicted to be more than $200,000, according to the Ontario Ministry of Tourism.
