The need for volunteers comes after Town council approved the sale of two lots, earlier this month, to the 33year-old home-building charity. The lots, which were created from surplus town land on Elmwood Road, were sold for $25,000 a piece. "Council's support is only the first step," said Burton. "Now we need to make sure Habitat for Humanity has the volunteers they need to help build the homes next year," said Burton. The two Oakville families that will live in the finished single detached homes will work with the volunteers to construct the homes beginning in the spring of 2010. The families must invest 500 hours of `sweat equity' into building their own homes and other projects with Habitat for Humanity. They will also pay for the homes through a mortgage. "We give our partner families a hand up, not a hand out," said Kathrin Delutis, executive director of Habitat for Humanity Halton. Partner families and volunteers for the Oakville projects will be selected after public information nights this fall. Habitat for Humanity Halton has a goal of building 28 new homes in Halton over the next five years. "There are families in Oakville that need help and Habitat for Humanity responds to that need in a direct way," said Ward 2 Town and Regional Councillor Fred Oliver. Ward 2 Councillor Cathy Duddeck also praised the charity group which she noted was worthy of greater support. "Habitat for Humanity provides a much-needed service," said Duddeck. "I'm looking forward to other landowners within the community to follow the Town's example and partner with Habitat for Humanity," said Duddeck.
