OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, September 18, 2009 · 22 Youths invited to help launch YMCA Skate Park Saturday Tomorrow (Saturday) community youths and families are invited to attend the launch of the YMCA of Oakville's Skate Park from 4-9 p.m. It will be at 410 Rebecca St. Interested participants (aged 13plus) are encouraged to bring their helmets, skateboards and safety gear, and sign an on-site release/waiver. "The YMCA aims to get more kids involved, stay active and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Through this, they will learn sportsmanship, understanding and acceptance of others," said Brandon McGuire, supervisor of child and youth services. "Our goal is to have youths focus (skateboarding and youth culture) in an environment that develops and fosters a sense of community, understanding, respect and acceptance through healthy interactions with peers and adults. It is important for us to connect youth back to opportunities and to the YMCA of Oakville to further engage them to pursue personal growth." The Skate Park has already proven these behaviours in action through initial `testing' in conjunction with Clearview Church this summer. Saturday's official launch will draw attention, enthusiasm and anticipation from among our community youths for the full 2010 season when we take the Skate Park to youths. This free youth-focused launch will feature three Oakville musical groups -- Look Here Junior (www.myspace.com/lookherejunior), Killing Isaac: (killingisaac@gmail.com) and Inland: (www.myspace.com/inlandontario). Concerts will run 5-8 p.m. The YMCA of Oakville acknowledges sound equipment and technical support by Oakville-based River 16 Recording Studio (River16.com). An incentive for the family is available on the YMCA's website -- a free swim pass available to those who bring a copy of the Skate Park Launch to the YMCA and which can be redeemed on or before Oct. 2.
