OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, September 18, 2009 · 32 Event drew 2,000 people last year, including many local families Continued from page 30 There will be even more for people to see this year, as the number of sites has increased to 24 from last year's 18. The majority of last year's sites were south of the QEW. There is now representation in north Oakville with the addition of sites like Palermo Schoolhouse and Joshua Creek Heritage Centre. An event of this magnitude takes a lot of organization. The Doors Open Oakville committee started meeting in March. The committee is made up of various members of the community, such as representatives from various heritage, business and tourists sites, as well as mem- bers of the town's three historical societies. "We have a super committee and they work very, very hard," Savage said. The economic impact of Doors Open Oakville on local business is substantial. "We know from the questionnaires that a lot of people stayed overnight in hotels and ate at local restaurants, so we had the Ministry of Tourism run our event through their economic impact statement generator and they came up with a figure of more than $212,000 for the weekend," Nesbitt said. An information tent will be set up in Towne Square throughout the weekend starting the day before the event on Friday, Sept. 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Besides brochures, the tent will also have members of the various historical societies on hand, as well the Town's heritage planning department.
