As we agreed at our town working group table on Thursday, if the lights cannot be stopped, which is the right thing to do (as just the sight of 70-foot towers looming over local homes is unpleasant), then limiting the use of these lights to 9 p.m. at the latest, is the least the Town should endeavour to do. Even this means we will still have increased traffic, noise and disturbance well beyond school hours, which again, does not reflect the current and long-standing zoning of the area. Some at our working group table stated that they have enjoyed this local environment for more than 45 years and were shocked that it could be taken away from them by a Catholic school board with a whim for night events. Next they will open up a used car lot on their premises, or anything else such a misdirected board could choose to do. While some steps to mitigating the effect of lights were discussed, this was done reluctantly, as the lights simply should not be allowed at all. It grew roughly two feet a year and stood about 12 foot this spring. It blossomed for the first time. I watched as the tiny damson plums grew from the size of a pea, to the size of a cherry, to the size of a fully-grown plum. They were green at the beginning of August. On Tuesday, Sept. 8, I decided the plums were now ready to pick and make jam. I decided that since I was free Wednesday morning (Sept. 9) I would make the jam. After my breakfast, I picked up my basket to pick 50-60 plums. They were all gone -- not one left. Somebody had cleared the tree.
