25 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, October 9, 2009 Toronto Marathon winner to lace up for KSM run The fourth annual 5KSM Run for Hope will include 2008 Toronto Marathon winner Daniel Mburu Njenga, on Thanksgiving Monday (Oct. 12). Thanks to sponsors, including title sponsor MacDougall, MacDougall & MacTier Inc., all registration fees and pledges will once again go directly to Kerr Street Ministries' (KSM) children's and youth programs. The number of participants is hoped to be more than the 700 who took part last year, said race director Caroline Glasbey. "We are absolutely thrilled to have Daniel Mburu Njenga, 2008 Toronto Marathon winner, compete this year and stir up the competition. It should be a very exciting race," she added. This year's race will take a new, more streamlined route, starting and finishing at Heritage Square on Kerr Street, while taking a tour of downtown Oakville. The Athletics Canada certified 5k run starts at 9:45 a.m. for both serious and recreational runners. The 5k power walk starts at 9:50 a.m., with the 1k starting at 11 a.m. The event will also feature entertainment by Celtic band Fiddlestix and fun for children at the Kids' Zone. More details are available on the race web site: www.5ksmrunforhope.com. Register online or by mail. Brochures can be found at The Running Company, The Running Room, the YMCA of Oakville and at fitness centres and stores around Oakville. On Saturday, Sept. 19, the 5KSM was named the beneficiary of $800 raised from the Downtown BIA's wine and food Tasting Pavilion, as part of the Downtown Fall Festival Event. The funds will be used to provide running shoes for youths from the Kerr Community who will be running the race this year. For more information or to volunteer, contact Glasbey at 905-338-5294 or e-mail ksmrunforhope@sympatico.ca. Author set to visit Author Mike Nickerson will be in Oakville on Tuesday, Oct. 13 to discuss his latest book, Life, Money and Illusion; Living on Earth As If We Want to Stay. The book was inspired by the dilemma of having an economic structure that has to grow to remain healthy on a planet that is finite. The event, sponsored by Oakvillegreen Conservation Association, will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Trafalgar Room at Town Hall, 1225 Trafalgar Rd. Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
