Wedding Anniversary Happy 50th Wedding Anniversary DUNCOMBE, Ruth - September 18th 2009, at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, Oakville. Ruth was born in 1932 in Manchester, England to Alexander and Gertrude Warner. She remained there throughout her youth, attending school during the war years and eventually completing an apprenticeship in hair and wig design. During her teens, encouraged by her father Alexander, she developed a keen interest in classical music and opera. She also enjoyed travelling as a young woman and made many summer excursions to the south of England and to Italy. She relocated to the Channel Islands in her twenties, where she established and maintained the Harlequin hair salon in St. Helier, Jersey. During this time she made many lifelong friends and continued to travel periodically to France and England. In her mid thirties, following the loss of her father, she immigrated to Canada to discover new opportunities. After a few challenging initial years, Ruth settled in Oakville and was very happy to become a Canadian citizen. Ruth had her only daughter Rachael in 1972 and was a loving and devoted mother. She continued to work as a hair stylist until the early 1980s, when an opportunity arose for her to retrain as a nurse at Sheridan College. She worked very hard and did well as an adult student, earning her nursing qualification as an RNA and going on to work in the areas of psychiatrics and obstetrics in Toronto and Milton before entering her last nursing position at Vistamere in Oakville. During these years she also reconnected with her love of music by joining the Oakville Opera Guild and was delighted to partake in an opera tour in Austria. In recent years, Ruth also enjoyed a rich social life while living at the Granary Condominium with her husband John. Sadly, their retirement was cut short after a long and happy marriage when John fell ill with ALS. Despite her difficulties with leukemia, Ruth did her best to care for John throughout his illness and was deeply saddened by the loss of her husband in 2007. She remained very close to her daughter Rachael and to lifelong friend Lawrence Miller during her recent decline in health, and remained a keen music fan, avid learner and enthusiastic grandmother. Ruth will be missed and remembered with much love always by her daughter Rachael, son-in-law Tony, granddaughters Michaela and Juliet, brother Tom and sister-in-law Madeleine. Cremation has taken place. Ruth's friends are invited to gather and celebrate her life on Sunday October 25th from 2pm to 5pm in the function room at the Granary Condominium building, 100 Lakeshore Road East.
