Fareshare food drive to Oct. 18 Oakville's Fareshare food bank reports donations are brisk in its annual Thanksgiving food drive. While Fareshare is saying thank you, it welcomes more. Fareshare has seen client numbers go up drastically over the past year and even with the recession declared over, is not anticipating the economic rebound will translate into higher employment and fewer clients until next year. Average monthly visits to the food bank (families can only use it once a month) now is at 378 -- a dramatic hike over last year. In the past eight months, Fareshare has averaged 23 new clients each month, a 64 per cent increase over the similar period in 2008. The food drive began Oct. 3 and continues to Sunday, Oct. 18. Food can be dropped off at the food bank -- at 1240 Speers Rd., Unit 6, 10 a.m.2 p.m., Monday to Saturday. It can also be dropped off at all fire stations in Oakville and supermarkets in bins provided by Fareshare. Paper bags for donations are handed out at the Loblaws superstore at Trafalgar Road and Dundas Street. All non-perishable foods are welcome, but items most needed include: canned fruit and vegetables, cooking oil, instant coffee, tea (not herbal), canned whole potatoes, canned stew, dry and canned pasta, saltine soda crackers, spaghetti and baked beans. Laundry powder and diapers (#5 and 6) are also appreciated. Monetary donations are welcome as they provide vouchers redeemable at local grocery stores for milk and fresh fruit.
