11 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, October 22, 2009 Souper Bowl Sunday PHOTOS BY NIKKI WESLEY / OAKVILLE BEAVER SIMPLY SAMPLING: More than 500 people stood in perhaps the only soup kitchen line most of them will ever experience, to sample soups from local chefs and raise funds to combat growing local homelessness at Souper Bowl Sunday III at Appleby College's dining hall. More than $82,500 was raised in support of Home Suite Hope, a local charity addressing local homelessness. Oakville resident Cari MacLean, wife of Hockey Night in Canada host Ron MacLean, said her committee works to put a face to something, local homelessness, that is often difficult for many to comprehend in Oakville. The committee worked with Gold Spoon Sponsors Longo's Fruit Market and RBC, as well as many local restaurants, to host the event that sees local artists and students craft bowls that are donated to the event and sold to attendees for a minimum $50 donation. Then, local chefs who have created mouthwatering soups, serve up the soups for sampling in the newly-purchased bowls. Those attending then get to take home their bowl as a souvenir.
