Hospital will open with 457 beds 5 · OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, November 4, 2009 Continued from page 4 struction, unless we change our output specs. So if we say halfway through it, it's not three MRIs, it's four MRIs and they already have some building done, we would pay a premium. Those were huge burdens up in Brampton." Oliver said there were many changes made after the start of the construction of Brampton Civic Hospital to accommodate the new technology at the hospital, which caused huge cost increases. "We are already working on our equipment needs and specifications, so our goal is to get this out to market once and not have any of those midconstruction changes that are going to drive costs up," Oliver said. "We have about 39,000 pieces of equipment going into this building and we have a plan for all of them." The new facility, which has the working title of the Oakville Hospital until an official name is determined, will be built on a 50-acre site located at Third Line and Dundas Street. Construction is anticipated OPEN HOUSE We build strong kids, strong families, strong communities. N to start in spring 2011, with an expected occupancy in late 2014 or early 2015. The Oakville Hospital will have 457 beds when it opens, with a capacity of 602 beds. The hospital will have a three-storey portion that is the same size as OTMH, which will house things like the emergency department and the diagnostic imaging department. There's also a 12-storey section called the inpatient tower. A second two-storey building on site will offer rehabilitation and nephrology services. The two facilities combine to offer more than 1.5 million square feet of health care space. Approximately 80 per cent of all inpatient rooms will be single-patient rooms. This is a requirement of the Ontario Ministry of Health for all new hospitals. The remainder of the rooms will offer semi-private care. Patients whose health plans do not cover private rooms and would like one can be upgraded for a Ministryset charge. If all semi-private rooms are full, patients will automatically be placed in a private room at no extra charge, Oliver said. The facility is expected to draw some of the brightest minds in medicine in the area, as Halton Healthcare Services is in talks with McMaster University to make the hospital a learning centre. The next milestone for the project is the Request for Qualifications, (RFQ) which will be issued this month. The RFQ invites companies to indicate their interest and qualifications for the project. The short-listed teams will be invited to respond to the next step, the Request for Proposals, in 2010. The shortlisted teams will then develop and submit comprehensive, detailed plans for the new facility. Following a review process, one team will be selected. Once the contract is signed with the successful bidder, construction is expected to begin in 2011. For information on the new Oakville Hospital, go online to www.haltonhealthcare.com.
