He's almost here. Santa arrives Saturday. St. Nick will arrive in the 61st annual Oakville Santa Claus Parade (Saturday, Nov. 21). It promises to be a great party as the parade digs into a rock'n'roll Christmas theme for the big day. With little more than a month to go until Christmas Day, the Santa Claus Parade is a long-standing Oakville tradition that ushers in the Christmas season. Float entries were made many weeks ago and now the parade will run through the streets of downtown and Kerr Village. Floats, bands, clowns, Christmas characters and more will entertain thousands of residents, young and young-at-heart, expected to line the streets of the downtown and Kerr Village in anticipation of the arrival of Santa and his reindeer. The fun begins at 9 a.m. when the parade will start at Lakeshore Road and Reynolds Street. It will move west along Lakeshore Road to Kerr Street, then north on Kerr and culminate at Kerr and Stewart streets. The first float should arrive at Lakeshore and Navy at about 9:20 a.m., and at Lakeshore and Kerr at 9:30 a.m. and finally at Kerr and Stewart at about 9:55 a.m. The times are approximate, but the further along the route you sit, the later the parade will start for you. With just about a month left before Dec. 25, the parade will take place rain or shine, so dress for the weather. Every year the parade is preceded by the Oakville Firefighters' Toy Drive and the Kinsmen Food Drive for the Salvation Army Jingle Bell Fund. The Friends of Falgarwood also participate each year selling red noses for charity. They walk the parade route dressed as clowns and sell red noses for $2. This year's recipient charities will be Wellspring and Kerr Street Ministries (KSM). So bring spare change, canned goods and new, unwrapped toys on parade day. Each year a colouring contest is offered in anticipation of the parade. This year's winner will be Honourary Grand Marshall in the parade. Calvin van Voorst, 9, will ride with Mrs. Claus in a carriage leading the parade. Runners up ride in Santa's float. The 2009 runners up are Jarryd Farrell, 5, Victoria Lawrynowycz, 9 and Samantha Hunter, 10. Lauren Montanari, last year's winner, rode in the Cinderella carriage with Mrs. Claus -- despite last year's rain. "Mrs. Claus is really nice and being in the parade with her was so much fun," said Montanari. Kids are encouraged to bring their letters to Santa on parade day, too.
