The White Oaks Wildcats came about as close as anyone this season, forcing Milton District to a tiebreaker in Tuesday's Halton jun- ior boys' volleyball Division 2 championship at Sheridan College after taking the second set 26-24. But MD's overall fierce attack and the experience gained from a couple of tough tournament runs proved to be just too much for the Wildcats, who surrendered three late kill points to Mustangs' star Jordan MacIntyre and dropped the winner-take-all third set 15-9. Both teams enjoyed great fan 9 LOCATIONS TO SERVE support throughout the epic encounter, which was neck-andneck until the bitter end. MD took the first game 26-24 after the Wildcats had them at set point. "We were the underdogs today, but having taken them to three sets in the regular season, we came in here confident," said White Oaks standout Dylan Munro, who came up with a half-dozen kills in game two to push unbeaten MD to the YOU BETTER! brink. "We figured if we gave it our all it might just be enough. Unfortunately it wasn't. Both teams played amazing." Echoing those sentiments was Mustangs coach Dave Walker. "That was definitely the biggest test we've had all year. Quite honestly I didn't expect them (the Wildcats) to come across the net so hard at us today. That was a great match." The Wildcats was first to break 20 points in the first two games and got some fierce hitting from both Munro and Marco Folino. Their star power -- who because of his religious affiliations wished not to be named -- delivered an impressive overall game, while White Oaks matched their championship rivals point-for-point until fading at crunch time. Evan Kwan nailed a big ace serve to win game two. WHY WHEN THE GOVERNMENT IS PAYING OVER 50% OFF THE PRICE OF YOUR NEW FURNACE & A/C Up $ * Cash Back to WAIT? OT and Loyola were evenly matched in Tuesday's final. Neither team opened up more than a threepoint lead until Loyola, led by middle Raj Dharni, ran off seven of the last nine points to win 25-20. It would be OT, behind Edris Suleimanyar and Andrew Wilkinson, that would dominate the second game. The Devils turned a 6-3 deficit into a commanding 19-11 advantage on its way to evening the match. OT built a 7-4 lead in the deciding game but, with strong serves from Alex Englert and Babic dropping the ball wherever he wanted, Loyola fought back. Trailing 10-8, the Hawks took seven of the last eight points to close the match. "That's junior volleyball," said OT coach Jay Anderson, whose team's only regular-season loss was a threeset defeat against Loyola. "You can have all the momentum and then, poof, it's gone. We had them but couldn't finish them." Malette hopes Babic doesn't disappear next year. The Hawks are 29-3 in league play over the last two seasons, including 6-0 in the playoffs. Having the big middle back next year would go a long way to defending the title. LocalWork.ca is more than just a job board.
