MICHAEL IVANIN / OAKVILLE BEAVER `Unselfish' Hawks claim Catholic hoops crown By Jon Kuiperij BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR When the Loyola Hawks play together, they're pretty hard to stop. Loyola won its first-ever provincial Catholic senior boys' basketball championship last weekend in St. Catharines, concluding an undefeated showing with a 57-49 victory over Brampton's D'Youville Panthers in Saturday's final. With his team struggling a bit last week, Hawks head coach Gary Laurin stressed the importance of teamwork before the tournament began. His players responded, putting last week's regular-season loss to Nelson behind them and winning three of their four tournament contests by double-digit margins. "We went back to our unselfish brand of basketball," said Laurin. "We'd had a little bit of a lull there with guys trying to do too much on the floor. We talked about how important the team is." Hawks point guard Mike L'Africain led his team with 15 points in the championship game, earning MVP honours. Teammates Adam Presutti and Mike Andrews were named first-team all-stars at the competition. Rohan Boney also drew praise from his coach for his defensive work on the Panthers' top player. But Laurin was hard-pressed to single out anyone for their play on the weekend. "That's a really tough question," he said. "It really was a team effort. Every guy did what was asked of him." The basketball team's victory added to what was already a remarkable month for Loyola n See Loyola page 19 Returning Members On line Registra on www.oakvillesoccer.ca Open ll February 14 New Members Open Registra on February 20 and February 27 9 a.m. 12 p.m. Oakville Town Hall South Atrium 1225 Trafalgar Road Pine Glen Soccer Centre 1520 Pine Glen Road Oakville, ON L6M 4P4 Siblingsof returning members are eligible to register in person within the me period but with proof of birth For more informa on, please visit our website at www.oakvillesoccer.ca
