Well-known social activist Craig Kielburger will be the guest speaker at the Halton Regional Chair's Breakfast on the Environment, Tuesday, April 20, 7:30 a.m. at the Burlington Convention Centre. Kielburger, a member of the Order of Canada at age 27, founded the organization Free the Children in 1995 when he was 12 in order to fight child labour. The organization has since built more than 500 schools throughout Asia, Africa and Latin America, providing daily education to more than 50,000 children. It has also set up more than 23,000 alternative income projects to assist women and their families in achieving sustainable incomes through its Adopt A Village development model. Kielburger is also the cofounder and director of Me to We Social Enterprises. "The goal of Me to We is to encourage ethical living and social responsibility, while also helping Free The Children achieve financial sustainability," states the website www.metowe.com. "Me to We includes international volunteer travel programs, a publishing house, a music label, leadership workshops, a speakers' bureau and a clothing line." Tickets are now available for the breakfast, which is being held to celebrate the winners of the Chair's Environmental Awards. Sponsored by Bell and TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, the awards support Halton's youth in achieving environmental excellence in their schools, community and studies. The awards are split into two categories: · The Halton Youth Awards for Environmental Scholarship support Halton youth who have chosen to pursue post-secondary studies that relate to the environment. Award winners in this category will receive a $1,000 scholarship. · The Halton Youth Awards for Environmental Excellence recognize an appreciation for the envi8 WEEKS ONLY ronment in our youth and raise awareness of local environmental initiatives, giving Halton elementary and secondary students the opportunity to win $500 for their school.
