Grandmothers to Stride toward solutions On Saturday, June 12, and Sunday, June 13, 2010, grandmothers across Canada will walk in support of African grandmothers who are holding the continent together in the face of the AIDS pandemic -- and Halton Grandmothers will join in the Stride to Turn the Tide of AIDS in Africa. The Halton Grandmothers Stride to Turn the Tide of AIDS in Africa will take place on Saturday, June 12 at 9:30 a.m. It will leave Downtown Oakville (the route starts at St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School and moves to Lakeshore Road, with halfway rest stops at Trafalgar Place and Churchill Place. This cross-generational community effort encourages everyone `to sponsor a granny" at www.grandmotherscampaign.org/nationalwalk.html. Canadian Grandmothers, and those in Oakville, will be orphaned by AIDS in their care. In Halton, Stride to Turn the Tide, will unite 150 grandmothers from six granny groups -- Oomama, Ubuntu Grandwomen, Blooms for Africa, Bronte Grandmothers, HUGS, and Growing for Grannies. A presentation was held on Wednesday, April 7 at Churchill Place, at Revera Retirement Home, featuring Wendy Belcher, a Bronte Grandmothers member who will be walking with her grandsons on June 12. Pat Couillard, a resident of Churchill Place, is the great grandmother of Belcher's grandchildren representing four generations and providing a family symbolizing a link with intergenerational families in Africa. Revera Retirement Homes is the major sponsor of the Stride to End the Tide of AIDS in Africa. As part of the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign of the Stephen Lewis Foundation, they will walk in solidarity with thousands See Grannies page 12 9 · Thursday, April 15, 2010 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.oakvillebeaver.com Thank You RIZIERO VERTOLLI / OAKVILLE BEAVER GRANDMOTHERS CARE: From left, Wendy Belcher of Bronte Grandmothers, Pat Couillard, in front Geoffrey and Hayden Belcher, with oomama's Lorraine Green.
