Field hockey season underway soon The Halton Field Hockey Club will begin its 2010 season tomorrow (Saturday) with a clinic for juniors. Players ages 8-17 will be instructed in basic skills and participate in fun drills and competitions. The two-hour event will take place at the Pine Glen Indoor Soccer Facility on Third Line, beginning at 9 a.m. NCCP-trained club coaches will be joined by university players, some of whom began playing field hockey with the Halton club. Girls under the age of 14 who would like to try the sport before registering for a season are welcome to come out and participate. They are advised to email their intention to info@haltonfieldhockey.com in advance to ensure space is available. Halton Field Hockey Club's youth program for elementary school girls has been very successful at introducing this Olympic sport. Now entering its eighth season, the Halton club expects to field more than 60 players this season. Space is still available. The regular season will begin May 1 and runs for 10 weeks, alternating locations between Burlington and Oakville Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to noon. The program does not run on long weekends and finishes before the end of July. In addition to Saturday's recreational sessions, players also have the opportunity to try out for Halton's under-14 Heroes competitive team. The Heroes recently won bronze for indoor hockey at the Ontario Winter Games in Muskoka. High-performance teams in the under16 and under-18 teams are also offered. The development of high-caliber teams has been hampered in the past by the lack of suitable playing fields, but all play this year will be conducted on the new artificial turf fields in the region.
