www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, May 13, 2010 · 20 Second annual shred event to help fight Down Syndrome The Halton Down Syndrome Association (HDSA) and Shred-it will host the second annual HDSA Community Shred event Saturday, May 15. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., people can get unwanted, but sensitive, documents professionally destroyed while supporting a worthy cause. The event will take place at the Dorval Crossing West Shopping Centre (Dorval and QEW), 280 North Service Rd. W. -- in the parking lot between Metro and Tim Hortons. Consumer fraud and identity theft are becoming an epidemic. To raise awareness and to promote prevention, Shred-it organizes community shred events. With tax season over and spring cleaning season in full swing, individuals may find that they have piles of unwanted documents that contain sensitive information. Consumers can bring any documents with their name, address, account numbers or personal information to be destroyed. These are some of the documents you should consider shredding -- bank, credit card and investment account statements; cancelled cheques; credit card solicitations; address lists, (e.g. child's class list, groups to which you belong); utility and other bills; anything with a name, address or other personal information. All materials collected at the event will be destroyed onsite and recycled. There is a suggested donation of $5 for each bag and $10 for each box of material shredded. A tax receipt will be issued for donations of $20 or more. Along with a receipt, participants will receive a coupon for a discount at Lick's Homeburgers & Ice Cream. The HDSA is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to improving quality of life for people with Down syndrome. Established 26 years ago, the HDSA is run entirely by parents and volunteers with the goal to see children become responsible, self-sufficient, fully integrated members of the community, who are accepted by their peers and able to lead happy, productive lives.
