Serving Oakville Since 2005 The students at White Oaks Secondary School truly are the lords of the trivia. Both the school's intermediate and senior teams recently won the Reach for the Top championships in Halton Region. "It would be nice to say it's the teachers, but I don't think it's so," said the school's teacher and team coach Steve Lebourveau of what makes his students so knowledgeable. "I think the kids are really motivated, we get a huge number of kids to practice compared to other schools. We get 30-40 kids out. They are hard-core interested." The competition is modeled after a former Canadian television quiz show of the same name. Now the school's senior squad, consisting of Grade 11 and 12 students, will represent Halton when it moves onto the provincial championships this weekend in Toronto. There is no provincial level for the intermediate division where participating students are in Grades 9 and 10. "We've never been to the provincials so we're hoping we'll do really well," Lebourveau said. White Oaks used five players on both of its teams. For each round of competition, four players participate per team so several members of the White Oaks team alternated between matchups. The competitors have to answer trivia questions from a variety of categories such as history, sports, pop culture and more. Lebourveau said to choose its school's top five players, the coaches looked at individual performance during tournaments throughout the year. Both age level competitions took place in Burlington. The intermediate team beat Oakville Trafalgar High School in the final on April 13. The team consists of Jack Reeves, Alastair Smith, Arun Desai, Osama Ahmed and Marcus Tutert. The senior team beat Appleby College in the final on March 30. The team consists of Aaron DiMaria, Erik Brown, Giancarlo Jones, Samar Khurshid and Allen Sigal.
