Movie screening launches 30th annual Terry Fox Run The 30th anniversary of the Oakville Terry Fox Run kicks off Wednesday, May 19 with an exclusive screening of Terry, the 2005 Terry Fox Movie starring Shawn Ashmore. The special event will begin at 7 p.m. at Encore Cinemas, 171 Speers Rd. Admission is by donation. "To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time this movie has ever been shown in a theatre and we are thrilled to be kicking off our 30th anniversary celebration with this special screening right here in Oakville," said Ralph Robinson, chair of the Oakville Terry Fox Run. A representative of the Ontario Terry Fox Foundation will also be in attendance. Encore Cinemas, in addition to providing the venue for the Terry Fox movie, is the first business in Oakville to be participating in the Terry Toonie Shoe Campaign. Customers at Encore Cinemas can donate $2 to the Terry Fox Foundation and have a shoe with their name displayed in the theatre. "We are looking forward to having the walls of our theatre covered with Terry Fox shoes in time for the screening of the Terry Fox Movie on May 19. We encourage other businesses to participate in this new initiative to raise funds for cancer research," said Jeff Knoll, CEO of Encore Cinemas. Businesses interested in participating in the Terry Toonie Shoe Campaign are invited to contact Janet Balfour at 905-469-0015 or cbalfour@yaknet.ca, or Caroline Glasbey at 905338-5294 or scglasbey@sympatico.ca Oakville organizers have several events planned for the year-long celebration of Terry Fox. On June 2 at 6:30 p.m., 20-year old Oakville resident Christi Campbell will be cutting and donating her long locks to make a wig for a child with cancer and taking pledges for the Terry Fox Foundation. "Christi joined our Terry Fox Run Committee this year and was so inspired after our first meeting that she decided she wanted to do something special for Terry. We are so proud of Christi for deciding to honour Terry this way for the 30th anniversary," said Pam Damoff, one of the Oakville Run organizers who has known Campbell since she was seven years old. The Christi Cuts Her Hair For Cancer event will be held at the Harbour Banquet and Conference Centre in Bronte and further details will follow. During July a celebration of Terry Fox's birthday will be held and then on September 9, a leading Terry Fox researcher will be speaking at a breakfast in Oakville. The 30th Anniversary Terry Fox Run is on Sunday, Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. and will move to Coronation Park for the first time.
