HEADED TO ALBANY: Jonathan Newhouse, pictured playing in a tournament last month at the new Giants Stadium in New Jersey, has accepted an NCAA Division 1 lacrosse scholarship from Albany University. "Terry and Troy have really brought leadership and accountability," Dawick said. "Troy is an absolute warrior. He's so dedicated to the team. He's a player's coach. These guys demand a lot but the players love to play for them." The Rock will have its work cut out for it tomorrow. At 11-5, Washington had the league's best record and was the league's high- est scoring team. But the Rock was second in both goals for and goals against (allowing just two more than Orlando, who the Rock beat 15-10 in last Saturday's semifinal). The Rock opened the season 61 before losing five straight. But it rebounded to win three of its last four. Toronto then rallied with five fourth-quarter goals to beat the Buffalo Bandits 13-11 in the quarter-finals. "Ever since we made that comeback against Buffalo, it's like we're a team of destiny," Dawick said. For now, he has done all he can. That leaves Dawick, who has played in the World Series of Poker, in a familiar position. "This will be tough. Sometimes you play your cards and hope for the best," he said. "You hope you don't get that bad beat. I can't control anything but I'm confident our team will be ready." Newhouse commits to Albany It's been an exciting year for former T.A. Blakelock student Jonathan Newhouse. Newhouse transferred to The Hill Academy in Vaughan to focus on academics and lacrosse in his senior year of high school, won the Ontario Hockey Federation midget championship with his Greater Toronto Hockey League squad and recently signed with the Brampton Excelsiors junior A lacrosse team. But the most exciting development might be the NCAA Division 1 field lacrosse scholarship Newhouse recently accepted from the University of Albany, where he'll suit up this fall. Newhouse is a product of the Oakville Minor Lacrosse Association and attributes his lacrosse success to coaches like Ken Gillies, Danny Tavares, Jason Donnville, Jim Beatty, Grant Sloane and the late Brian Kruse. He also credits The Hill Academy, where he's on the Dean's list and is coached by NCAA graduates Brodie Merrill, Patrick Merrill and Brice Queener, for taking his game to the next level. Hawks a year stronger Continued from page 43 www. com The experience the Hawks gained should also help them in this year's playoff run. "Our core group last year were all in Grade 10 and they came up against a pretty experienced team (Notre Dame)," McNamara said. "Our guys are a year stronger now." That has shown at the plate, where the Hawks have almost doubled their offensive production from six runs per game last year to 11.6. So even if they can't decide who the best shortstop is, they're determined to show who is the best team in Halton. -- Herb Garbutt Depend on the largest High Efficiency NO INTEREST NO PAYMENT FOR 6 MONTHS OAC AIRE ONE MADNESS SALE Gas Furnace Dealer in the Golden Triangle.
