www.oakvillebeaver.com · OAKVILLE BEAVER Thursday, June 3, 2010 · 4 Shayna's battle has inspired two Relay for Life teams Continued from page 1 named for Shayna, which includes daughter, mother, father Ian, family and friends for a total of 24 people, will participate in the ninth annual Relay for Life in Oakville June 4-5. The money raised goes to the Cancer Society. Because the team has grown so large over the years, it has become two separate teams, one with family members and the other comprised mostly of Shayna's schoolmates. Over the years the team has done various fundraisers to raise money and has already collected $12,000 this year, which does not include money raised by the school team. The school team ran a fundraiser recently at their school, Pine Grove Public School and raised about $1,000. Several of Shayna's friends are working on the team, most of whom will go to T. A. Blakelock High School with her next year. The team has also put on a Change for Relay activity at the school, where students were asked to drop change into buckets left in their classrooms by the team. "Shayna's an inspiring young lady," Sandy said. "She's just a sweet kid. She's a little bit shy, but she's what her teachers call a quiet leader. She doesn't want to be the centre of attention, but she certainly motivates people very quietly." The family has been involved with the NIKKI WESLEY / OAKVILLE BEAVER TEAMWORK: Ian and Shayna McDonald at the Shaynanigans tent at last year's Relay for Life at Appleby College. Relay for all but one year, a year when Shayna was in hospital. That year was particularly hard on the family as Shayna's grandmother, Sandy's mother, died of melanoma cancer while the youngster was going through the bone marrow transplant. "Shayna, when she was quite young, said to me one day, `You know I want to give back, I want to do something, but I want to do something to fight all cancers, not just one type,'" said Sandy. That's exactly what she and her family and friends have done through the Relay. Also, each of the past few years the team has won the best decorative tent award at the Relays. The construction project is spearheaded by Ian and each year the design is a secret until it is unveiled the day of the Relay. There are further reasons why the family is so heavily involved with the Relay. "The support the Canadian Cancer Society provided us, especially here in the Oakville office, has always been phenomenal: transportation support, community support, information, it was just incredible," Sandy said. She said the society is the largest charitable funder of childhood cancer research in Canada, something important to the family as Shayna is a child survivor. "Everyone who is registered on our team puts a huge effort into fundraising and we also put on a big charity garage sale and bake sale every year," Sandy said. Sandy has been working in the local Cancer Society's fundraising department the last few years as well. This year's event is taking place at Appleby College, located at 540 Lakeshore Rd. W. Hundreds of participants, with their teams, will begin walking Friday, June 4 at 7 p.m. and finish at 7 a.m. Saturday morning. For more information, visit www.cancer.ca. Spring inTO SUMMER WITH ...
