Helping Haiti Boy with cerebral palsy needs help for therapy Fundraiser June 12 aims to cover family's expenses An Oakville 12-year-old boy likes doing normal everyday things other children his age do such as playing video games, watching movies and more. However, for him simple everyday activities are a challenge. Spencer McGillivray has cerebral palsy. His parents want to send him to Kelowna, B.C. this summer for a two week intensive therapy program. However the program costs $1,000 per day for 10 days. So to help them send their son to therapy they are holding a fundraiser, called Steps for Spencer, on Saturday, June 12 at Le Dome Banquet Hall in Oakville. It will be a dinner with dancing and an open bar. Unlike other children his age, for Spencer to do every day activities poses a challenge. Things such as getting up in the morning, dressing, washing, eating, going to school and even playing require assistance. Cerebral palsy is a term used for a group of non-progressive, non-contagious motor conditions that cause physical disability. His parents say he's improved over the years, but with his condition, progress only comes with persistent hard work, such as the therapy they hope to send him to. The therapy is called Masgutova Neurosensory-motor Reflex Integration the MNRI Method. The fundraiser runs 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. Tickets are $100 for adults and $50 for children under 12. The banquet hall is located at 1173 North Service Rd. E.
