Among his specialized postings in the past, he was a team leader with the tactical team and also a member of the service's training bureau. "Known to all as a kind, gentle man, Constable Henshaw was an exceptional instructor because of his outstanding patience. He was always thinking of his fellow officers and service members," said Chief Gary Crowell. "Our entire service is deeply saddened by his passing. He will be greatly missed by all." Carr said he worked closely with Henshaw in the tactical and training units. "He was a large asset to the service and a great trainer. His patience and experience were always being transferred to the younger officers. He was a copper's cop," said Carr. Henshaw was first elected to the Board of Directors of the Halton Regional Police Association in 1990, serving as a director until 1993. He was president of the HRPA from 1997-2001. HRPA Administrator Paul LaCourse remembers Henshaw as a good friend, cop and colleague. "We've been friends since high school. He was one of the nicest guys I've ever had the pleasure of knowing. He was extremely well regarded by friends and colleagues, not only here but across the province." In 2006, Henshaw was awarded the 2005 Police Association of Ontario (PAO) John Walker Award. "Throughout his tenure with the Halton Regional Police Association, regardless of which office he held, Bill demonstrated unconditional devotion to the membership, exceptional leadership abilities, and sacrificed endless hours of his own time, including time away from his family and friends," stated part of the 2006 PAO award testimonial. At one time Henshaw sat on the PAO Executive Committee. "Bill earned the respect of his peers and opponents alike for the professional manner he carried out his association business. He has the ability to separate the issue from the individual and resolve almost any issue or dispute to the satisfaction of our members. "Bill's skills and ability at the bargaining table are second to none. His preparation and work ethic always ensured our contracts were right in line with the other major associations, and our members were very appreciative as our ratification results were always extremely positive," added the PAO testimonial. The PAO testimonial said Henshaw also cared about non-uniformed police services staff. "Bill was and remains a strong believer that our civilian members are to be shown the same respect and appreciation as our sworn members at the bargaining table and during the day-to-day operations of the police service...." Flags at all regional buildings are being flown at half-mast in Henshaw's honour. He leaves behind his wife, Karen, who works in Halton police's communications bureau as a dispatcher. She was off duty on Tuesday. Henshaw's son Jeff lives in British Columbia with the couple's grandson. The Halton Regional Police Association is paying for the son and his family to be flown to and from Burlington for the funeral. Friends and colleagues of Henshaw can send letters of condolence until Friday, June 18 to HenshawCondolences@haltonpolice.ca. All letters received will become part of a memorial book for the Henshaw family. Visitation will be held at Smith's Funeral Home, 1167 Guelph Line, on Friday, June 11 from 3-5 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service is on Saturday, June 12 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul the Apostle Church, 2265 Headon Rd.
