The awareness day happens on Tuesday, June 15. According to the police one in eight Halton Region residents are elders and the number will reach 82,000 senior residents by 2015. The Halton police elder services coordinator, Constable Wendy Moraghan has worked collaboratively with Crime Stoppers of Halton to ensure citizens have an alternate way to report Elder Crime. People can call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Tips will be investigated by designated seniors investigators. Police say elder abuse can include physical, financial or psychological abuse or neglect. The service also adds that elder abuse is not just a family matter and some cases can result in fatal consequences.
